They may be "Christians," but they certainly aren't "patriots" - at least with respect to the USA, and the ideals and principles upon which it was founded.
In my experience most people don't want freedom of religion. They want their religion to be the only one. This, too, is an American tradition, going back to Colonial days when the good Puritans of Massachussetts would brand and cut the tongues out of Quakers.
So, no, Stephen, I think they are patriots. Alas!
Point well taken, of course, but I was writing - somewhat uncharacteristically for me, I'll admit - from the perspective of a political "idealist" in my previous remarks.
