This is really interesting. We've all seen the maps showing "Red vs. Blue" states. Most of those maps make it appear that most of the country is Red, while the coasts are blue. These maps show the Red vs. Blue results in a different way - by population.

I was going to carp a bit about the winner-take-all criterion used to determine a "red" versus "blue" state, but then saw that the article you referenced included Professor Vanderbei's maps, which to me are the most relevant in this context ...
