United Church of Christ votes to endorse gay marriage:
"The resolution calls on member churches of the liberal denomination of 1.3 million people to consider wedding policies 'that do not discriminate against couples based on gender.' It also asks churches to consider supporting legislation granting equal marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples and to work against laws banning gay marriage."
I continue to support letting churches decide what is, and is not a marriage. I believe the state should only recognize domestic partnerships. This is similar to a business partnership, and would be available to be entered into by any two people. A mother and daughter, gays, anyone. It would not be called marriage - it would be a recognition of a special relationship that would protect the assets of the partnership.
Churches would still control "marriage." It would continue to be a sacred arrangement, that would be supported by the church. I'm not sure that I agree with the UCC's way of handling this, but I do support non-discrimination by the state.
