Well, since my sister was deaf, I had some personal experience with this. I thought I might catch a break from the deaf community at least.
One time, my sister, Carol, was on the phone with her friend, Lisa. There was a knock on the door, and Lisa was there. I told my sister that Lisa was at the door, and she said, "No, I'm on the phone with her!" As it turned out, they were having two separate conversations, Lisa thought Carol had invited her over, so she got in her car and drove over. The whole time, my sister was talking, thinking Lisa was still there.
Of course, deaf people have their own ways of making fun - she'd often just turn off her hearing aids when she didn't want to listen to me....
